Is your Truck Big Enough?! We Weighed Our Camper at SmartWeigh and CAT Scales!
How much can your truck tow? Want to understand payload and towing capacity? Are you overloaded, in anticipation of the upcoming camping season? We decided to weigh our truck and Airstream with SmartWeigh and CAT scales and breakdown the differences between the two.
We first weigh our truck and camper with Escapee's SmartWeigh. Their process is in-depth. We weighed our Ford F-250 first, loaded as if we were leaving on a trip. Next, we hook up the camper and head back to the scales. The details in the data is fantastic! You get a weigh sheet with all axles weighed, left and right sides. This allows you to redistribute weight, if you need.
Next, we headed to a CAT scale to re-weigh the truck and camper. We thought it important to have data from both sources. Weighing your truck and camper at a CAT scale is very simple! You just pull up, sit on the scale for a minute or so while they calculate the weight, then pull off the scales. The CAT Scale app shows you the weight of your axles as well as your gross weight. You can even download a pdf of your weight.
Finally, we discuss our experience with both weigh types. Is one better than the other? Both give you similar data. If you need a quick weigh, I recommend going to the CAT scales. If you're looking to redistribute your weight and find out exactly where your weight is carried, I recommend going to a SmartWeigh to know exactly which axle and which side of your vehicle are overweight and how you might be able to better distribute that weight.
